Voice

I open my mouth
to speak
But not a word
emerges.

I try again.
This time
I manage to eek out
A tiny squeak.

And the next time
I can actually speak
But in a different voice
From my own.

This voice is deeper.
Hoarser.
More manly.

But I'm a woman.
And I want to sound like one.
I don't want to have people run
at the sound of my voice.
I don't want to feel
the scratchiness.
I don't want to have to
concentrate
In order to awallow.

And I want to sing.

Can I have my voice back?
PLEASE?

Oiy did you yell too much at your students or siblings yesterday? Refuah Shleima! Sending you a cyber cup of hot cocoa (if that's possible.)

Refuah shelaimah! As a fellow singer, I can fully appreciate the frustration you must be experiencing right now. I lost my voice a couple of months ago and it was torture until I had it back.

Ha! Judging from the picture and opening words of your poem, I was settling down for a serious, heartzig piece...and then I almost laughed out loud in this whisper-quiet room of working girls!

Feel better soon!!
And when you get your voice back, we can sing together. Over a big ice cream sundae. Can't wait.

Don't strain your voice!
You may get spasmodic dysphonia, God forbid. Check it out, google it, I'm serious.
Refuah shelaima...

IA - they've kinda returned.

KD - yeah, i've seen that many a time. every time i'm feeling down, i play that link... thanks for posting it.

JM20 - dunno - what i just read on it doesn't say that straining your voice causes it. and don't worry, i ain't straining it. my voice is way too precious to me. i had my class do some classwork instead of me teaching them...

Here, have some chicken soup with me.

(Those are swirls of rising steam, btw, not dollar signs, despite common misconceptions)

You must be contagious, I feel crummy too. I haven't posted lately because I'm busy falling asleep in strange places, though I've mentally gone through 3 posts since last time.

BM - (sorry, i like calling you that. you're gonna have to live with it)
the soup was yummy. expensive, too. and yeah, i didn't tell you i can pass diseases through cyberspace?

david - nope, couldn't sing the theme song, so the other team won.
:(

I wanna come to Sweet Choice! Can I crash?

Also, I once gave my sister pinkeye over the phone, so I'd say you can for sure pass along communicable diseases over the internet. :-P

How can that even be a question?! The one on L is immeasurably better (Parking being the number one variable.) Plus, they probably know me there by now...
And I don't have my own car, but at night it's easier to borrow one of my parents'.

Scraps--
Crash away! It'd be great to see you! Especially while eating ice cream! What bliss...

Is *that* what this is about - being hoarse? And I was reading into it about identity crises and stuff. Time to cut the English class critiques and just read, I think. :-D

IA - we'll have to ship you some...

AP - it's back, thank G-d. my voice and me - we're tight stuff.

bad4shidduchim - LOL. yeah, plain pshat. no drash involved at this time.
