Responsibility

I don't think many kids (or adults!) nowadays know what it means to take responsibilty for their actions. They think that if they do something wrong, people should and will automatically forgive them, no matter how grave the sin. They think that if they say "I'm sorry" then they shouldn't have to face the consequences.

You should see the look of surprise on my students' faces when I tell them that I accept their apologies for their chutzpah, but they still have to sit detention. It's almost like they never heard of such a thing; that once they said the magic words, all's forgotten.

Sorry, kiddos, but that's not the way life works. You lose a million dollars: no matter how many times you apologize, the money ain't comin back.

Learn to take responsibilty, own up to your faults, and not expect things to magically disappear...

My kids still think they deserve a replacement when they lose/break the prize I gave them last week... [rolls eyes]
